Dance Science

Dance Science is an emerging field of study in dance academics that applies scientific principles to understand dance and dancers. It originated out of Sports Science; however, over the years it has forged its own space and as a prominent area of study and research.

Dance Science utilizes a multidisciplinary approach, gathering information from kinesiology, human biomechanics, somatics, psychology, nutrition, strength & conditioning to foster a better understanding of the dancer’s body and occupational demands.

The impact of dance science is not limited to dancers alone and can be used in public health as well. Various studies have been conducted that showcase the positive impact of dance on people with Dementia and Parkinson’s disease. Dance Science is a new and unique area of research and provides an endless opportunity for growth. Just like dance is limitless, so is the capacity of dance science.

Why Dance Science?

Scientific studies in dance help understand the needs and demands of the dancing body by recognizing dance as an aesthetic sport. Studies conducted with dancers as shown that on an average 70% of dancers face an injury during their career span.

The knowledge of dance science helps you understand how to improve and maintain physiological and psychological wellbeing while ensuring that your performance is not affected. The primary aim of it is better health and wellbeing of dancers. Understanding the body and mind through scientific principles improves self-awareness of our body and practice.

Techniques developed through research can help dancers improve muscle strength, flexibility, balance, mobility, aerobic fitness and also combat issues of burnout. This knowledge can allow the dancer to create efficient movements, perform better that have reduced injury risks.

“Dance has taught me many great things in life! I strongly believe that dance has many facets to it and to keep growing we need to keep exploring. I enjoy diving into different art forms and explore how they are different yet similar in nature. I want to develop techniques that reduce injury risks, increase longevity in practice for Indian dancers. I am committed to increasing representation of South Asian dance in the area of dance science and research.”
